| Bio: | I really don't like writing bios. They're silly little blurbs that don't tell you much of anything about who I am. If you're reading this, though, it's probably for one of a couple of reasons, so I'll run down 'em here for you. Business up front: First off, I'm a writer, primarily of speculative fiction. I have two forthcoming publishing credits to my name, and am working on more. I also write poetry (both mainstream and sf), and had a few pieces coming out last August in Scifaikuest's print and online magazine. At one time, I also edited. Wedgefic was a yearly magazine oriented towards speculative fiction writers in college in New England that I started up thanks to a lot of sweat and begging and promotion. There exists two issues of the magazine, and while I always think about going back and doing a third, the cons definitely outweigh the pros there. Still, I chalk it up to a good experience -- I learned a lot about the publishing process, and about my own writing. Now I slush read for Hadley Rille Books. I dance. Mostly I dance Argentine tango, but I've done some ballroom and breakdancing. A couple of years ago, I was involved in the collegiate ballroom circuit. Since then, I've pretty much turned to dancing tango exclusively -- especially as my time constraints became more and more limited. I still facilitate the dance community at WPI, though, having recently finished my tenure as the Social Dance Club president. On that note, I'm also a college student. Right now I attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute, seeking a degree in Mathematics and Humanities. Afterwards, I'm hoping to go to grad school for some sort of degree involving storytelling in interactive media. Basically, I'm interested in new ways to appreciate quality storytelling through creative use of technology, though I'm definitely interested also in ARGs and real-space games. I recently completed my Major Qualifying Project in the Humanities in how to use the advantages of current technology in literature. It ended up winning the Provost's Award for Outstanding MQP, of which I'm entirely too proud. Now I'm doing research into q-polynomial association schemes for my MQP in math, a subject so mind-breakingly obscure that wikipedia doesn't have an article on it. I've directed and led a team-run Alternate Reality Game called Cor-Tech Biomedical Loves You. It was a pretty stereotypical story, but the first successful ARG for academic credit that I'm aware of. I also facilitated and directed an ARG between a student group and the administration with a more commercial target goal. It ran in April 2007 with some small measure of success -- and also won an award. I'm sure you've guessed that I stay pretty busy, so this journal doesn't get updated so much. If I talk about anything substantial, it's usually about one of the above topics, but I've done a lot of reading and have all sorts of strange skills that make their way on here from time to time. Party in the back: No, I do not have a mullet, thank you very much. This rambly section shall arrive later, as I get a spare moment for it. Right. So, first attempt at this. Probably the first thing anyone notices about is that I'm a little different from what you're used to finding in suburbia or urbia or ruralia or wherever you happen to be. A slightly strange curvature in the eyes; a surprising gesture; an expression that betrays my mind is doing something else while my body is engaged in its tasks. What most people latch onto as explanation is the ethnicity: my father is Japanese, while my mother is Anglo-American. It'd be more precise, though, to say that my father is Okinawan and my mother is Southern American. So you can imagine that my childhood was all sorts of interesting. I carry strange cultural knick-knacks in my personal baggage, and the fact that I'm not fully a product of either culture/ethnicity/psychology has at some times made me interesting and others suspect; some times a curiousity (like a human in an alien zoo), others a miscegenated anathema; some times an insightful observer of a community, others baffled and excommunicated; some times an able facilitator, and others the wedge driving people apart. Of course, this leads to all sorts of awkward situations where my expectations don't match up to others'. But I'm getting off track. About me, right? A sense of who I am? Mostly, I'm a very thoughtful individual, in that I spend a lot of time thinking. I think and I think and I think and hopefully something useful pops out at the end. Sometimes, this is a piece of speculative fiction, or a game, or an implication of a theorem (whether in math or sociology or something entirely bizarre). I have something of a talent for thinking, and as an ex once said, "I ask you how are things in your world, or what you've been thinking recently, because we both live in more in our heads than in the real world, so whatever is going on there is always going to be more interesting than the stuff we've been doing day-to-day." I'm one of those strange, rare ducks that manages to eke out an existence as a student (meaning well below poverty level) and still have a library. Why I lug it around with me is anybody's guess -- it's the most painful part of the moving process by far. I'm also a very passionate person. Everything I do, I try to make sure it's because I not only want to do it, but love to do it. Dance, cook, write, whatever. I participate because it takes hold of me and sweeps me away. I do because I love, and it fulfills me. | |||||
